An immediate request was sent out on August 17th from the Knights of Columbus Louisiana State Council to partner with the L.A. State Police and Pokemon for Progress Community in a statewide effort to collect supplies and food for flood victims. The recent catastrophic flooding is being considered the “worst natural disaster since Super-storm Sandy” in Southern Louisiana and the members of Fr. Placide Dobyns Council 1819 of Annunciation Parish answered the call to assist.
Due to short notice, the Knights of Council 1819 immediately sprung into action with the assistance of Troops of Saint George – Troop 1819 by sending out notifications and distributing flyers locally. With the assistance of Veda Matthews, principal at Annunciation Catholic School, additional flyers were sent home with students to notify parents of the immediate need for contributions in the relief effort being conducted by the Knights of Columbus.
The two day collection effort took place on August 20th & 21st with minimal planning time and manpower, however, the compassion of the community made these efforts a complete success, as nearly four truck loads of donations were taken in by Council 1819. All donations were loaded this morning and are set for distribution to those in immediate need.
A special thanks to fellow Knights Vaughn Gibson, Bob Ricca, Vic Haik, Pat Ezell, John LaRue, Joseph Aucoin, Ricky Rogers and James Silvan for their assistance. Council 1819 would like to send an additional thanks to Jessy Broughton for coordinating logistics and delivery and to the community for their efforts and donations in response to such a tragic event.
